Mine was leaking a little around the flapper but I took it off and cleaned it. It works fine now but I thought I’d seen somewhere to put Vaseline on there. Doesn’t seem like that would help much…

Short answer ~ ~ no. if your talking about the flapper valve any greasy products you apply there will in a very short time increase the problem. You have a lot of free floating calcium deposits at the bottom of the tank that just flow out when you flush. Vaseline, plumbers grease will just catch some of the deposits making things worse. If you’re talking about the shaft that some flapper valves rides up and down on the cold water will actually make the Vaseline, plumbers grease sticky. Back to short answer ~ ~ no.
Vaseline is far too soft and would not be water resistant. Try silicone caulk.
Sure you can use it as a temporary fix for the toilet flapper. Spread some of it under the flapper in the tank which will make a seal between the tank and the bowl stopping a leaking toilet. Let us know how it turns out @homelinepros.com
