I need an air compressor for a haunted house prop that I will be getting. It says to set the air compressor at 40-60 psi. Is there an air compressor that has variable pressure settings, or do I need to by something else to do that?

Yes, many have adjustable settings. Most adjustables work by simply turning a knob to adjust a pressure gauge. Some will merely go to a specific pressure set by the manufacturer. Sounds like you need may need something that is relatively quiet for the haunted attraction. Home Depot or Lowes sells many types. Make sure you read the literature or speak to a salesman before you buy to get what you need. I worked at an attraction called Brigantine Castle in NJ in early 80’s. At that time we did not use much in the way of compressors but today it seems the way to go to make a good scare is a combination of mechanical and live actor use. no the cut off switch is adjustable most air compressors will stop at 50 psi or 100 psi
Suggest you can control the tank pressure by adjusting the pressure switch on the compressor. If you set the pressure higher then the Maximum allowable for the tank you may blow up the tank if the safety valve does not open or is missing.Be certain that the safety valve is not missing and working properly. Be certain to read compressor manual and follow instructions precisely. The other better method (I feel) is to install a adjustable pressure regulator on the air line exiting the tank
