I’m planning on canning some pears tomorrow(my first time!) and all the recipes and methods I find say I need a rack on the bottom of my cooking pot. I’m going to use a big soup kettle I have. Any ideas on what I can put inside to use as a rack? any moms or grandmoms got any advice?? It would be greatly appreciated!! thanks for the help!!

NO!!!! Don’t do this – you can’t can low acid foods with out a pressure canner – they will go bad. Hot water baths aren’t recommended for canning at all.
If you want to can, go to your local hardware store (Ace, or somewhere like that) and buy a pressure canner. It’s the only safe way to preserve food with out refrigeration or dehydration.
I used to can fruits, homemade raspberry jam, tomatoes…etc. I did happen to have a canning pot with the rack. What you can do (as a friend of mine used to do) is get a round wooden cutting board and place in the bottom of the pot. Also, I do not feel purchasing a pressure canning pot is needed. My canned items never spoiled and I did this for many years.
Find a local commercial restaraunt supplier, and look around, or any larger chain of department store that has housewares…
